Revision series: Acute Appendicitis

Disclaimer: This is my own work to help me with revision. I am not an expert in the area, my knowledge comes from lectures and textbooks available to me as a final year medical student. The information is mainly from RCSI Handbook of Clinical Surgery, RCSI Lecture Slides and Bailey & Love's Short Practice of Surgery. The pictures are either my own or taken from above mentioned sources. Fell free to use it if it's any use:)

Summary

I did not write a summary of a wonderful stay in Portugal. Instead, I'll stick a photo of my last breakfast there- so Portuguese! With a pastry, never done correct cappuccino and the most amazing freshly squeezed orange juice...
Instead, I'll share the last view of the Portugal landscapes, surprisingly, very green. We have also seen fire, these days Portugal was hit by some merciless heatwave.
Instead, a first view of home, Ireland, well missed after 2 weeks of absences...(Don't get fooled, it was actually raining).

The rest of the summer passed at work, chilling with my brother, getting my best friend to visit, having some health issues, which are now, hopefully, sorted, and going full speed ahead into a FINAL year. This is all quite overwhelming and deserves a bit longer note...I am guilty of abandoning my virtual diary yet again...Please excuse me;)

Day 10, 11, 12 & 13: Neopop Festival

The morning in Porto has surprised us (me, C was still asleep) with rather cold, cloudy weather with some spells of light rain. I went for a walk, had a lovely Portuguese breakfast with view and got few bits and bobs for the upcoming travels (good old Tiger store...)

This holidays definitely I could sum up in a short 'everything worked out perfectly'- timing, organization, resources... So even this time, we were supposed to check out from the hotel at noon, and the free shuttle bus to the festival was leaving at 1 pm- perfect timing!

The bus was expected by a big bunch of young people, and no surprise, not everyone managed to get on the board. I am not sure what was planned for those few unlucky ones but the bus driver and the organizer guy have spent good 15 minutes on the phones... And similar situation happened on the next planned stop, Porto Airport. We went there despite the fact we wouldn't be able to pick up anyone else, and we spent another 15 mins waiting while the organizers were sorting out the issue...

But we got there eventually! Viana do Castelo is a lovely little town, which really reminds me of seaside resorts (except there is no sea, but a river). We spent some time on its stony narrow roads and river bank either looking for a decent place to eat, carrying ice cubes to the campsite and desperately trying to find some shadow during a 'walk of shame' from the festival late in the morning/ afternoon. It is a really lovely place and I am very happy I had a chance to visit it.

The festival itself, Neopop, is an electronic music festival and it's been organized in Viana do Castelo for the last 11 years or so. I have never been to any music festival, a music genre choice was a strong influence of C, since I am not crazy about any specific kind of music. So I attended with a very open mind, quite excited but not really knowing what to expect...It would be a nice addition to our already amazing holidays...and I got blown away!

Firstly, the organization. The festival (as in the gigs) happened on 3 nights (4-6th of August). A tree-day pass for a festival entitled us to a free place on a camping site, for which we opted on the beginning. But then, after few previous days of camping, we decided that we had enough for the rest of our life, and upgraded into GLAMPING (still at very affordable price). A company Sleep 'Em All' (http://www.sleep-em-all.com) rented a selection of pre-set tents, tipi's and yurts; we have chosen a Quibi- a little 'hobbit hut' made off wood, equipped with 2 decent mattresses, windows, and a lockable door, which have given us a bit more 'natural aircon' than we would get in a tent, more storage, and, most importantely, a comfortable sleeping conditions.

The glamping site was beside the original camping site and both had an access to portable loos (eww) and showers (yay); there was also a 'common area' (a gazebo that provided some shadow, seats and electricity;)). The campsites were situated by a town's river beach and a 20-minute walk by the river from the actual festival. Very pleasant and doable walk indeed! (I think there was a shuttle bus going from the tents to the party every 30 mins, we never managed to catch one though).

The festival lineup was promising (for C, since I had no clue about any of those DJs) and amusing- Portuguese do like their fiesta. An average night started around 11pm and finished late next morning. I mean, the finale was scheduled for 9-11am. Quite different to an Irish night out... Since we had to handle that massive load of fun carefully, we usually would have a nap till early morning, and go out when 'normal clubbers' just going home:) But I LOVED everything. The music was brilliant (even for such an ignorant), people were very friendly, enough facilities to satisfy the crowd (I.e. no massive queues), sprinkles to cool down when it started getting hot in the morning... There were 2 stages close to each other but placed so there was no sound disturbance. The placement of the festival also added to its awesomeness- one side was a harbour, the other- ruins of some ancient building; and the sun rising over them....That would be enough for me... But then they added props- huge balloons, confetti's, beach toys, shiny sparkly foil rain- and I'm sold!

I am very sorry that it came to the end, I am still humming the tunes, re-watching videos and longing to this amazing (quite unexpected) fun!

The final DJ (Richie Hawtin, I think he gained himself a new fangirl;)) finished after 11am. By the time we walked back to the campsite it was half 12...and, what a coincidence, a shuttle bus back to Porto was leaving at 1! We packed quickly and decided to take it and rather to go to sleep straight away, try to push until we get back to our hotel in Porto...

It was the hottest day in a history, at least felt like that. Massive hangover and sleepless night didn't really help! ;) We got some takeaway pizza (Pizza Presto again), borrowed an electric fan from the hotel (no aircon) and tried to sleep, while there was a little gig going on outside our hotel! Some street band decided that Sunday night is a perfect time for busking with speakers that would be suitable for a small festival ;). At least they played decent music... It was definitely an unforgettable experience, I would love to come back to Viana do Castelo, to Neopop Festival (although next year is going to be unlikely) and start attending more festivals!

Day 9: Porto

We woke up in our little paradise- a bit late! We were supposed to be picked up by Matt at a prearranged point, collected by our friends and dropped to Coimbra to catch a train to Porto so we had to rush a bit to pack our things and get on rowing! And let me tell you something, it is not fun to paddle when you're rushing, the sun is approaching its peak in the sky and the bridge (the meeting point) turns out to be much further away then we thought initially. The meeting point 'at the bridge' was in fact half a mile away, but we found Matt and we reunited safely with Harry & Seana. It was an amazing adventure, I love being close to nature, but you get to learn your limitations, both physical and due to the challenges of nature. Highly recommended to anyone that wants a little bit of a challenge in the heart in Portugal😉

We got to Porto Campanha train station. Searching for a taxi, we used the wrong exit, far at the back, had to drag our suitcases up the hill to the main road, but we managed to flag one. The driver had no clue where our hotel was and took us on a scenic route, which showed up on the receipt... Not a good start to the trip! But the hotel turned out to be lovely, very centrally located, and after checking in and a lovely and much needed shower I managed to resurrect my phone🙌🏻

Porto's architecture is even more picturesque than Lisbon- tall and azulejos- lined houses resembled colorful dancers.

We walked to the Ponte de Luis I, a bridge designed by a student of Mr Eiffel, the same architect that is behind the Parisian Eiffel Tower. The resemblance is uncanny- the tall, see-thru metal construction gives an impression of something very flimsy. The view on the river was something else! Not for anyone with fear of heights though😉

Then we stroll down to the river bank, a very busy yet charming walk full of cafes, wine (Porto!) places and street artists. We had to join the crowd and sit down, try Portos and enjoy the view and the atmosphere...

We went for dinner to Pizza Pronto, a great pizzeria; we had to wait a bit for a table, but it was worth it! I think I left a piece of my heart in Porto...❤️

Day 7 & 8: chill & kayaking

Last 2 days I'll describe in 1 post... They weren't super busy but very nice nonetheless...

Day 7 was at our friends, Seana & Harry, at their lovely house close to Oliveira de Hospital. We spent the day chatting, making friends with their dog Bella and 2 cats- Minky & Lily, exploring their beautiful garden, swimming in the pool, eating lovely food, more chatting, wine drinking and generally chilling and resting...

The next day we went for an adventure... The company Rock and River, run by Harry & Seana's friend, Matt, organizes a bunch of outdoor activities, including kayaking trips and camping in wilderness... something right up our street. Matt picked us up in chosen spot, organized the equipment, explained the route and dropped us at the starting point... It was really hard and frustrating on the beginning, the boat kept turning all directions except the one I wanted to go and it was really really hot! But after a while I got the hang of the paddling and it became really enjoyable. We had 2 stops on the way, 1 on an uninhabited island, 1 on the shore, had something to eat from our extensive pantry full of rolls and had a dip in the clear waters of the river Mondego. We encountered schools of wild fish, flocks of red kites and a myriad of different insects...

We wanted to get off the boat and onto the shore to find a place suitable for a camping but...there was no such place!  The shore was at a very steep angle, almost impossible to pull up the kayak, not to mention setting a tent! Eventually we found a good spot- very secluded and quiet. After clearing the ground of branches, we set the tent, had a snack and we decided to paddle back to a nearby restaurant... I got changed, packed a few necessities, threw my phone on the seat (as I wanted to take some photos of the river at the dusk... I started getting carefully into the boat, not to wet my sandals, and then everything started to wobble... And the kayak turned over and off I went to the water...with my phone! Got it quickly and turned it off, and we asked for a bag of rice at the restaurant to dry it up... And the old trick seemed to work!

On the way back from the dinner (I had grilled salmon, C had grilled chicken, both very nice and staff very helpful) we kayaked back to our tent, it was getting quite dark and pretty scary! I wouldn't have made it back without C. But when we settled back, we actually started to appreciate how beautiful the place was- myriads and myriads of stars, very quiet except for the crickets and the occasional fish jumping out of the water, and just the two of us... There is no one else I would rather be with at this particular moment in time... I'm so blessed 😍. No more photos tho as the phone was dead for that night... Maybe that's even better?😉
